DISCO Corporation to Construct New Gohara Plant in Hiroshima

Existing Disco Facility

Expanding Precision Tool Production to Meet Growing Semiconductor Demand
April 18, 2025

Tokyo, Japan – DISCO CORPORATION, a leading manufacturer of semiconductor manufacturing equipment headquartered in Ota-ku, Tokyo and led by President Kazuma Sekiya, has announced plans to construct a new manufacturing facility: the Hiroshima Works Gohara Plant. The plant will be built in Gohara-cho, Kure City, Hiroshima Prefecture, on the former site of the Kure City Sports Center, which was recently acquired by DISCO.

The new facility will focus on the production of precision processing tools—abrasive consumables that enable the high-speed, high-precision machining of materials when mounted on devices such as dicing saws and grinders. The construction will occur in three phases, with the first phase now formally announced.

Strategic Objectives of the Gohara Plant

Responding to Rising Global Demand

With the rapid advancement of generative AI, next-generation communication technologies, autonomous driving, and the global push toward carbon neutrality, the semiconductor and electronic components market is expected to grow steadily. To meet this rising demand, DISCO is expanding its manufacturing capacity by establishing the Gohara Plant, thereby reinforcing its position as a key supplier of tools for semiconductor fabrication.

Enhancing Business Continuity and Efficiency

The Gohara Plant will also play a pivotal role in improving DISCO’s production efficiency and business continuity management (BCM). Currently, production of precision processing tools is spread across the Kure and Kuwabata Plants in Hiroshima and the Chino Plant in Nagano. DISCO plans to relocate and integrate operations from the Kure and Kuwabata facilities into the Gohara Plant. This consolidation not only increases production efficiency but also mitigates risk—especially for the Kure Plant, which is located in a region vulnerable to tidal waves.

Phase 1 Construction Details

The Gohara Plant, situated in the Warahino mountain region of Gohara-cho, Kure City, will initially cover a building area of 13,179 square meters. It will be constructed using a combination of steel and reinforced concrete and will rise to 11 stories with seismic isolation features to ensure structural safety. The facility will offer a total floor space of 133,570 square meters, with an estimated investment of 33 billion yen.

Construction is scheduled to begin on February 1, 2026, and is expected to be completed by April 30, 2028. The overall site, including areas reserved for future expansion (Phases 2 and 3), spans 218,539 square meters.

Future Outlook

DISCO will assess the construction timelines for Phases 2 and 3 in alignment with market conditions and production requirements. The establishment of the Gohara Plant marks a significant step in the company’s long-term strategy to support the semiconductor industry through enhanced manufacturing capacity, improved operational resilience, and sustainable growth.
