Micron Opens Landmark Semiconductor Assembly and Test Facility in India

Micron Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ: MU) has officially inaugurated its new semiconductor assembly and test facility in Sanand, Gujarat, marking a significant milestone for both the company and India’s semiconductor ambitions. The advanced site transforms DRAM and NAND wafers from Micron’s global fabrication network into finished memory and storage products, supporting surging worldwide demand driven by artificial intelligence and data-intensive applications.

Once fully ramped, the first phase of the Sanand operation will include more than 500,000 square feet of cleanroom space, making it one of the largest single-floor assembly and test cleanrooms globally. The facility will serve customers around the world and is expected to assemble and test tens of millions of chips in 2026, scaling to hundreds of millions by 2027.

The project represents a combined investment of approximately $2.75 billion by Micron and its government partners, strengthening India’s position in the global semiconductor value chain. The opening ceremony was attended by Micron Chairman, President and CEO Sanjay Mehrotra, alongside Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, U.S. Ambassador to India Sergio Gor and other senior officials.

Describing the occasion as a proud moment for India’s growing semiconductor sector, Mehrotra highlighted the facility as the country’s first assembly and test site of its kind. He emphasized its role in building a resilient ecosystem to support the expanding global AI economy and acknowledged the strong backing from national and state authorities that made the project possible.

The Sanand facility has achieved ISO 9001:2015 certification and has already commenced commercial production. To commemorate the launch, Micron delivered its first shipment of memory modules manufactured in India to Dell Technologies for use in laptops produced domestically.

The expansion of conventional assembly and test operations in India complements Micron’s ongoing development of advanced manufacturing and packaging capabilities in the United States, reinforcing the company’s globally integrated production network.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw described the inauguration as a historic step in India’s transition from a major semiconductor consumer to an emerging global manufacturing hub. He noted that the facility supports the country’s broader strategy to establish a trusted, resilient and self-reliant semiconductor ecosystem.

In parallel with infrastructure development, Micron is investing in the next generation of semiconductor talent in India. Through collaborations with Pandit Deendayal Energy University (PDEU), Namtech and other academic institutions, along with government-supported skills initiatives, the company is advancing STEM education, specialized technical training and workforce readiness programs. Community initiatives, including digital and AI literacy efforts, are also being supported in the region.

Sustainability has been central to the facility’s design and operations. Built in line with Micron’s global environmental, health and safety standards, the Sanand site is designed to meet or exceed LEED Gold certification criteria. Advanced water conservation technologies have been implemented to enable zero liquid discharge, reinforcing the company’s environmental commitments.
