Openchip expands Irish operations

Limerick’s first city-centre LEED Gold-certified office scheme

Openchip, a European company specialising in the design and development of high-performance accelerator chips, computing platforms, and full software stacks for advanced computing applications, has announced a significant expansion of its Irish operations with the opening of a new design centre in Limerick. The facility will provide capacity for up to 70 highly skilled research and development positions, strengthening the company’s presence in Ireland’s growing semiconductor and advanced-technology ecosystem.

Headquartered in Barcelona, Openchip has experienced rapid growth over the past two years, expanding to a team of more than 350 employees. The company now operates across multiple locations in Spain, Italy, Poland, Belgium, France, Germany and Ireland, reflecting its continued momentum and its strategic commitment to building a robust European footprint for next-generation computing innovation.

Recognised by the European Commission as an Important Project of Common European Interest (IPCEI), the company develops in-house, high-performance RISC-V–based accelerators and systems-on-chip (SoCs), supported by an advanced full-stack software platform. Combined, these technologies are poised to drive the next generation of artificial intelligence and supercomputing capabilities across Europe.

Limerick’s First LEED Gold-Certified City Centre Office Scheme

The new design centre is located in the award-winning Gardens International building on Henry Street, developed by Limerick Twenty Thirty. As Limerick’s first city-centre office scheme to achieve LEED Gold certification, the building blends historic architecture with contemporary design, creating a modern, sustainable workspace.

The centre includes state-of-the-art laboratories and contemporary office facilities, and currently accommodates around 40 experienced Openchip R&D specialists. This number is expected to grow to approximately 70 within the next year. Openchip’s Irish operations already encompass senior leadership roles spanning product management, hardware and software engineering, architecture, and sustainability. The team is led by seasoned industry professionals, including chief product officer Robin Giller, whose extensive semiconductor career predates his role at Openchip.

The company continues to expand its workforce in Ireland, recruiting both graduates and senior experts. It also benefits from Ireland’s strong talent pipeline and the well-established collaboration between universities and industry across the midwest region.

Enterprise Minister Peter Burke said: “The opening of Openchip’s new design centre in Limerick is another significant endorsement of Ireland’s standing as a global hub for semiconductor research and advanced technology development.

“Openchip’s innovation will help power Europe’s next generation of AI and supercomputing systems. Through its involvement in the Commission’s IPCEI framework, it will play a crucial role in strengthening Europe’s leadership in advanced computing.

“This investment aligns with Silicon Island: Ireland’s National Semiconductor Strategy, positioning Ireland at the forefront of emerging technologies and encouraging further investment in chip design, research, and advanced manufacturing.

“It reflects our ambition to make Ireland a global leader in semiconductor innovation, bringing together manufacturing expertise, research capability, and enterprise support to drive highly skilled job creation and sustain economic growth nationwide.”
