Texas Instruments begins production at new Sherman semiconductor fab

Texas Instruments (TI) has officially started production at its newest semiconductor manufacturing facility in Sherman, Texas, just three and a half years after breaking ground. Company leaders were joined by local and state officials to mark the opening of the state-of-the-art 300mm wafer fab, known as SM1, in North Texas.

The facility will ramp output in line with customer demand and is expected to ultimately produce tens of millions of chips each day. These components will power a wide range of products, from smartphones and automotive systems to medical devices, industrial equipment, smart home technologies and data centres.

As the largest foundational semiconductor manufacturer in the United States, TI specialises in analog and embedded processing chips that are essential to almost every modern electronic system. With demand for electronics continuing to grow, the company is expanding its 300mm manufacturing footprint to strengthen supply resilience and long-term capacity. By owning and controlling its manufacturing, process technology and packaging, TI aims to ensure dependable delivery for customers for decades to come.

“The start of production at our newest wafer fab in Sherman represents what TI does best — owning every part of the manufacturing process to deliver the foundational semiconductors vital to nearly every type of electronic system,” said Haviv Ilan, TI’s president and CEO. “We are uniquely positioned to provide reliable 300mm capacity at scale, and we’re proud to continue our nearly century-long presence in North Texas.”

The Sherman site is designed as a mega-fab campus, with plans for up to four connected wafer fabs to be built as market demand grows. When fully developed, the site could support up to 3,000 direct jobs, along with thousands more across supporting industries.

TI’s investment in Sherman forms part of a broader strategy to invest more than $60 billion across seven semiconductor fabs in Texas and Utah, representing what the company describes as the largest investment in foundational semiconductor manufacturing in US history. With 15 manufacturing sites worldwide, TI is leveraging decades of in-house expertise to maintain tight control over its supply chain and meet the evolving needs of customers globally.
