€1.1bn Dresden expansion GlobalFoundries
Installation of the first production tools is scheduled to begin in 2026
GlobalFoundries has commenced construction on the expansion of its semiconductor fabrication facility in Dresden, marking a significant milestone in its €1.1 billion investment under Project SPRINT.
The project, being delivered in partnership with Exyte, is designed to reinforce the company’s manufacturing presence in Europe and support its broader global production strategy.
Once completed, the expansion is expected to boost annual output at the Dresden site by more than 110,000 wafers, increasing total capacity to over one million 300mm wafers per year. Installation of the first production tools is scheduled to begin in 2026, as the company scales operations to meet rising demand.
Originally announced in October, the investment will enhance the site’s capability to produce specialised semiconductor technologies used across key sectors, including automotive, industrial applications and connectivity.
GlobalFoundries has emphasised that the expansion forms part of its wider commitment to strengthening regional supply chain resilience, while ensuring Europe has access to secure, high-volume semiconductor manufacturing capacity.
