Taiwan Semicon Industry Realises US$67 Billion of Ongoing Construction
As demand for semiconductors continues to grow across industries, TSMC is significantly expanding its global manufacturing footprint.
In the semiconductor industry, a handful of companies stand out for their role in advancing next-generation computing technologies. Among them are NVIDIA, known for designing the GPUs that power advanced artificial intelligence systems; ASML, which supplies the lithography machines used to manufacture many of those chips; and TSMC, widely regarded as one of the world’s most critical semiconductor manufacturers.
As demand for semiconductors continues to grow across industries, TSMC is significantly expanding its global manufacturing footprint. In addition to strengthening operations in Taiwan—home to its most advanced fabrication plants—the company is investing heavily in facilities in Arizona, Singapore, and Germany. According to Industrial Info Resources, TSMC currently has more than $67 billion in active construction projects worldwide.
Expansion in Taiwan
A major share of TSMC’s investment is concentrated in Taiwan, particularly at its Kaohsiung wafer facility, which was completed late last year. The plant initially targeted production of around 20,000 2-nanometer wafers per month, but ongoing expansion efforts are expected to substantially increase output. The first expansion phase, scheduled for completion in the coming months, is projected to double production capacity. Additional development work is planned through 2028, with further increases in manufacturing volumes anticipated over time. Industrial Info Resources estimates the total investment in the Kaohsiung projects at approximately $18 billion.
TSMC is also pursuing other projects across Taiwan, including a smaller expansion in Taichung focused on 1.4-nanometer chip production and a new backend fabrication facility in Chiayi. That project is valued at roughly $6.2 billion and is expected to begin operations in 2028.
Arizona Manufacturing Growth
TSMC’s expansion into Phoenix, Arizona, gained momentum following the passage of the CHIPS and Science Act of 2022, along with additional U.S. government incentives and financing support. The company completed its first Arizona fabrication plant early last year, designed to manufacture 4-nanometer chips.
Construction is now underway on two additional fabs at the Phoenix campus, representing an estimated combined investment of $24 billion. TSMC has also indicated the potential for future phases of expansion at the site, which could eventually involve investments totaling hundreds of billions of dollars. However, those plans remain long-term and subject to evolving business and market conditions.
Additional Global Projects
Beyond Taiwan and Arizona, TSMC continues to expand in other strategic regions. In Dresden, Germany, the company is building an $11 billion greenfield semiconductor fab expected to be completed in 2028.
Meanwhile, in Singapore, TSMC is developing a 1.1 million-square-foot fabrication facility with an investment exceeding $7 billion. Construction is progressing rapidly, with completion anticipated later this year.
