MTU and Tyndall Launch New Postgraduate Programme to Support Semiconductor Industry
Munster Technological University (MTU) and Cork-based Tyndall National Institute have partnered to create a new postgraduate programme aimed at tackling the worldwide shortage of skilled professionals in the semiconductor sector.
The programme is designed to build a strong pipeline of talent for semiconductor manufacturing by equipping learners with the specialist knowledge required to work in advanced cleanroom facilities, often referred to as nanofabs. These highly controlled environments are used to protect sensitive semiconductor wafers during production.
Targeted primarily at technicians and engineers already employed in semiconductor cleanrooms, the course offers an opportunity to upskill while earning a postgraduate qualification. It is also suitable for recent STEM graduates seeking to begin careers in cleanroom technology and semiconductor fabrication.
Delivered by academic and technical experts with industry experience, the curriculum covers key areas such as semiconductor cleanroom processing, nanometrology, and cleanroom utilities and maintenance.
The flexible programme is offered online, allowing students to attend lectures remotely while applying their workplace experience to assessment activities. By combining academic learning with practical industry knowledge, the initiative aims to strengthen Ireland’s specialist workforce and support both national and international semiconductor development strategies.
The course is scheduled to begin on 14 September.
The launch follows MTU’s introduction of a new Master of Engineering in Integrated Manufacturing Engineering in June. The Level 9, part-time programme, based at the university’s Kerry campus, was developed in response to growing demand for advanced engineering expertise across Ireland’s manufacturing sector. It focuses on areas including sustainable manufacturing, industrial automation, artificial intelligence, data engineering, and Industry 4.0 technologies.
