New Irish semiconductor council announced
The proposed council will draw members from industry and academia
Government ministers face a wide-ranging cabinet agenda today, with key discussions set to cover responses to rising inflation linked to conflict in the Middle East, alongside plans to strengthen Ireland’s semiconductor sector.
Semiconductor strategy
Separately, Peter Burke is set to present plans for the creation of a new Semiconductor Advisory Council, a key step under Ireland’s broader national strategy for the sector. The initiative builds on the government’s “Silicon Island” programme, aimed at strengthening Ireland’s position in global semiconductor innovation.
The proposed council will draw members from industry and academia, providing strategic guidance as Ireland seeks to expand its semiconductor ecosystem. The sector already comprises more than 130 indigenous and multinational companies, generating approximately €13.5 billion in annual exports and supporting around 20,000 jobs.
Through the Silicon Island initiative, the government has set an ambitious target to grow employment in the sector to 34,500 over the next decade, reinforcing Ireland’s role as a key hub for semiconductor development and investment.
